Heat transfer applies a pre-printed design to the garment using a combination of heat and pressure. The category covers several related techniques: vinyl transfers, plastisol transfers, and sublimation. The common thread is that the design is created separately, then bonded to the fabric rather than printed directly onto it. This approach opens up polyester and performance fabrics that other methods handle poorly, and enables individual personalization like name and number application on athletic apparel.

Heat transfer: the right call for athletic apparel and specialty finishes
Heat transfer occupies a specific niche in apparel decoration: the jobs that other methods handle poorly. Polyester performance fabrics do not take screen print ink reliably. DTG requires cotton. Embroidery adds weight that disrupts the drape of lightweight athletic wear. Heat transfer was developed, in large part, to solve these problems.
The clearest use case is athletic apparel with per-item customization. A team jersey run where every player gets a different name and number requires a method that can handle variable data at low per-item cost. Heat transfer delivers that. Each transfer is produced with the individual's details, applied under heat, and the result is a durable, legible application that holds up through the season.
Specialty finishes are another area where heat transfer has no direct competition. Metallic effects, glitter, puff, and reflective finishes can all be achieved through specific transfer types that are not available via screen printing or embroidery. If the design brief calls for something beyond a flat print, heat transfer is often the path.
The limitation is longevity on high-use cotton garments. A plastisol heat transfer on a tee that gets washed three times a week will eventually show edge lifting or cracking, faster than a comparable screen print. For everyday branded apparel, screen printing is the more durable choice. For performance wear, athletic kits, and specialty-finish items, heat transfer is the right one.
