Series A Merch: How to Mark a Funding Milestone With Branded Items

How to plan branded merch for a Series A, Series B, or funding milestone: what to order, how many units, and what makes milestone merch different.

The best Series A merch is a single premium item produced in a deliberately small run: a heavyweight crewneck or hoodie in a considered colorway, decorated to feel like something worth keeping rather than something distributed. The quantity should feel limited. The quality should be unmistakably above your standard team swag.

A funding milestone is one of the few company moments that actually warrants a merch drop. It marks a before and after in the company's story. The people who receive milestone merch (founders, early employees, investors, advisors) are a small group who were part of getting the company to that point. The merch should reflect that.

Milestone merch versus standard team swag

Standard team merch is ordered in volume for ongoing use: onboarding kits, event drops, quarterly replenishments. The goal is utility and brand consistency across a growing team.

Milestone merch has a different job. It is a commemorative object tied to a specific moment. The right item feels like something the company made for itself, not something it ordered from a catalog. This distinction shows up in product selection (premium over practical), quantity (intentionally limited), and decoration (considered rather than just branded).

What to order for a Series A drop

Heavyweight pullover or hoodie. The anchor item for most milestone drops. Premium fleece at 10 to 12 oz in a colorway that reflects the brand at this stage. A small left-chest mark in embroidery, or a back print that references the milestone (the round, the date, a campaign line) in screen printing.

Quality tee as a secondary item. A garment-dyed or heavyweight tee pairs with the hoodie and extends the kit without making it feel excessive. Browse tees and hoodies for options in the right weight range.

A statement item for investors and advisors. If the gifting list extends beyond the internal team to investors and board members, consider upgrading that tier: premium outerwear, a high-quality tumbler, or a leather accessory with laser engraving. The gift to an investor who just wrote a check is different from the gift to the team member who built the product.

How many to order

The instinct to order generously for a milestone drop usually results in excess inventory of an item that was supposed to feel special. Milestone merch works because ownership feels meaningful. Order for the exact list: founding team, key early employees, investors, and a small buffer for close advisors.

A Series A drop for a 20-person team with 5 investors typically runs 30 to 50 units. That is the right scale. It is small enough that receiving one means something.

The colorway decision

Series A merch is an opportunity to do something slightly different with the colorway. A new shade, a limited run color, or a slightly more premium version of the brand palette. The item should be recognizable as belonging to the brand but feel like a step up from standard team inventory.

Avoid colors that only exist in promotional catalogs. Pick something that could plausibly appear on a retail shelf.

Decoration for milestone merch

For hoodies and crewnecks at this tier, embroidery on the left chest is the standard. It reads premium and holds up indefinitely. For a back print referencing the milestone, screen printing gives clean, durable results.

If the milestone merch includes hard goods (tumblers, accessories), laser engraving is the most premium decoration choice. The mark is permanent, which is appropriate for an item meant to commemorate a permanent milestone.

Lead time for milestone drops

Plan for 4 to 5 weeks from artwork approval to delivery. Milestone drops often have a specific announcement date or event tied to them. Get the order into production as soon as brand direction is confirmed. Do not wait for everything else to be finalized before starting the merch process.
